2017/5/17& 0183;& 32;1 As Jbay said the joint between the layers of MDF will probably be visible even if you cut it after assembly as you suggest. Maybe not the first year but after some time it will appear. 2 The exposed edges of the MDF are going to take paint very differently
If you are making a shaker style door I would pocket out the panel area to the size of the door panel. On a 3/4" door you could pocket out 1/2" deep. Cut a 1/8" panel about .005 scant to inlay in the pocketed opening. It's a little more material but a lot less prep.

After you have then clean then scuff sand the finish with 220 grit paper and its ready to be coated with oil based enamel. I wouldn't use a primer if you plan on the paint glaze. The thicker the emulsion the less the grain will show.

It’s going to be a long long process for me to do this on my own but I’ve found it’s doable. After the glue on the door strips dries I will have to fill slight gaps between the side strips and top and bottom strips and caulk between the routed edges of the original doors and the new flat Shaker look strips.

2/21 5: CNC MDF shaker doors advice One answer is to make a two pc mdf door. First cut out the frame and dado the back side from 3/4 material . Then cut the Panel using 3/8 material with 1/8 dado so when inserted into frame you will have that 1/8" reveal in the back of the door.

I have used the OP's method of sticking strips to a board to produce low cost "hardwood" doors just take a sheet of 13mm veneered MDF machine up some 100x7mm hardwood and stick it on then edge with iron on veneer.

We have been making one piece MDF lacquered doors for years. No joints to expand and crack and they prime and finish beautifully. Our shakers are made with 5/8" MDF with an added 1/4"frame which is coated with glue nailed and clamped.
